Description
Summary:Free radicals are a common form of reactive compound that has a composition of unpaired electrons. The reactive compounds can cause negative effects such as degenerative diseases, autoimmune, and cancer. Therefore, antioxidants are needed to scavenge free radicals. The content of chemical compounds in soursop (Annona muricata L.) such as flavonoids and phenolic compounds can be used as natural antioxidants. In addition to soursop plants, the genus Annona is a group of plants grow in tropical area with many benefits such as antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic. In this study, the total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) of leaves, twigs, and fruit extracts of soursop were discussed; the antioxidant activity of soursop fruit extract was determined using DPPH method; and a review article about the chemical content and pharmacological activities of the genus Annona was prepared. Leaves, twigs, and fruit of soursop were extracted by reflux using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and ethanol. The TPC, TFC, and AAI DPPH were determined using UV-visible spectrophotometry. Article review was carried out by considering and analyzing literatures. The TPC of soursop extracts was in the range of 1.560 –8.996 g GAE/100 g. The TFC of soursop extracts was in the range 0.174 –8.306 g QE/100 g. The AAI DPPH value of ethanol fruit extract was 1.514 ± 0.110. In peparing the review article, 139 literatures were collected and analyzed. The highest TPC was shown by ethanol leaves extract (8.996 ± 0.125 g GAE/100 g). The highest TFC was given by ethyl acetate leaves extract (8.306 ± 0.253 g QE/100 g). Based on literature review, the genus Annona was reported to have many chemical compounds and various activities.
