INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/48473 The fair trade initiative is one of the grass-root movements which is said to be a solution to the problem of economic imbalances between the northern and southern countries which results in problems of producer’s welfare in developing countries such as low product prices and producer’s income, unskilled workers, unsustainable production process, and exploitation of workers. Several studies state that fair trade is successful in creating new markets, increasing producer’s income, and producing products with high value and quality, but some argue about the benefits of fair trade for small-scale farmers and farm workers in developing countries as the producers with lowest economic level. This thesis will analyze the fair trade activities in the coffee trade in Indonesia with a case study of farmer’s group in Bandung Regency to provide an overview of the implications of fair trade, especially for the welfare of small scale farmers and farm workers in Indonesia. The thesis will also identify who are the fair trade actors and how they play a role in the development of the coffee trade in Indonesia. text
