Description
Summary:Abstract:
The increase of coal fired power plant operating at PT. PLN (Persero), cause the problem of disposing and utilizing the fly ash. Nowadays utilizing fly ash still not maximum, cause cost operating for disposing, among others require land with considerable enviromental. Fly ash is a typical waste material of pulverized coal fired power plants, it is nonplastic, cohesionless and very fine granular likely to be in the size of silt. Steel making industries require metal coating for preventing corrosion attack in the humid climate like in Indonesia. The solid waste by product created by metal coating is an electroplating sludge in blue green colors contain metal compound which could be considered for productive purpose like stabilizing agent. In view of this appliation a laboratory experiments were carried out to study the effects of fly ash and electroplating sludge on the unconfined compressive strength of clay. In this experiment is research on the triaxial UU,CU,CD. As the fly ash and electroplating sludge have several metal compound which can provide an adequate array of divalent or trivalent cations, the various chemical processes play an important role rather than physical process for improving soil properties. The clays analyzed in the present study were obtained from Gede Bage and Cilampeuni clay formation in the Bandung plateau. In the present study fly ash was obtained soon after firing process from Suralaya thermal power plant and electroplating sludge was obtained from PINDAD. Several combinations of fly ash, electroplating sludge, and Bandung clay mixture at their optimum moisture contents have been used to evaluate the effectivenes of fly ash and electroplating sludge in stabilizing the Bandung clay which is expansive. In addition to index and other physical properties, compaction, unconfined compression, triaxial UU,CU,CD, chemical analysis and X-ray diffraction test were carried out to obtain necessary engineering properties. At certain percentage mixture of fly ash, electroplating sludge, and Bandung clay with certain curing time obtained increase of cohesion (C) and friction angels (?). Addition of fly ash and electroplating sludge is not guarantee to increase cohesion or friction angles, in fact decrease. Influence of mixture fly ash with clay were showed very sensitive to moisture, density, delay compaction. Class F fly ash is normally used with portland cement or lime, in addition to having pozzolanic properties.
