Summary: | Abstract
Administration of combination of tyroxine and methoprene has been studied on silkworm, Bombyx mori L., in order to know its effect on larval period, silk gland, cocoon yield and nutrition indices. This research used experimental design, with four concentrations of tyroxine and five concentrations of methoprene. The result showed that, administration of tyroxine not significant with the control. The contrary the administration of methoprene prolonged fifth instar larval period and it is significantly different from the controL Single administration of tyroxine or methoprene or combination of both, increased the silk gland weight, wet and dry cocoon weight, shell layer weight and pupal weight. The best concentration to increase them are tyroxine 1500 ppm and methoprene 10 ppm or combination of them, except for dry pupal weight the best concentration are achieved by concentration of tyroxine 2000 ppm and methoprene 20 ppm. The posterior silk gland highest increased, followed by medial silk gland and anterior silk gland. The administration of tyroxine increased consumption rate (CR) and growth rate (GR) of fifth instar larval of B. mori, the contrary administration of methoprene decreased the CR and GR values, except on concentration 10 ppm. The administration of thyroxine does not influence the efficiency of food utilization of fifth instar larval of B. mori, except of ECD value on concentration 10 ppm. On the contrary the administration of methoprene significantly influence the efficiency of food utilization of fifth instar larval of B. mori. This research also discussed the mechanism of action both of hormone on silk gland weight, cocoon weight and nutrition indices. |
