Description
Summary:Hypertension, a condition characterized by systolic blood pressure (BP) ?140 mmHg and/or diastolic BP ?90 mmHg, is a very common cardiovascular disease affecting community. Indonesians use traditional plants for hypertension therapy because they were easily and affordably obtained. There was lack of guideline for using traditional plants on hypertension therapy and their impact if co-administrated with antihypertension drug. Cucumber, a widely-used plant for lowering BP, but the mechanism of action against angiotensin receptor has not been studied. Therefore, the aims of this research were to inventorize traditional plants used for hypertension treatment, find out the mechanism of action of cucumber in lowering BP and its effect when combined with angiotensin receptor blocker. BP was measured using CODA® tail-cuff. Cucumber juice was given 9, 18, 27, 36 mg/kg-bw; combination of cucumber 4.5 mg/kg-bw and Losartan 2.25 mg/kg-bw; cucumber 9 mg/kg-bw and Losartan 2.25 mg/kg-bw; 13.5 mg/kg-bw cucumber and Losartan 2.25 mg/kg-bw; 18 mg/kg-bw cucumber and 2.25 mg/kg-bw Losartan; and Losartan 4.5 mg/kg bw. Angiotensin-II 100 µg/kg-bw was used to induce hypertension. Results showed that Onopordum acanthium L., Apium graveolens L., Ginkgo biloba L., and Tripterygium wilfordii Hook. f. could be used as alternative/adjuvant in hypertension therapy and co-administrating those plants with standard drugs could enhance the antihypertensive effect. Cucumber juice 36 mg/kg-bw showed lowering BP (p<0.05) by blocking angiotensin receptor and its effect was increased by higher dose. Coadministration of cucumber and Losartan resulting a synergistic interaction and magnified the antihypertensive effect, therefore caution should be applied.
