Description
Summary:Abstrak :

A warranty is a contractual agreement between the manufacturer and the buyer, which requires the manufacturer to rectify all item failures should failures occur within the warranty period. From the manufacturer\'s point of view offering the item with a warranty implies \'additional cost due to servicing the warranty. This servicing cost depends on the warranty policy terms and item failure distribution. This servicing cost has a significant effect on the manufacturer\'s profit because directly connecting with product price. As a result, it\'s important for manufacturer to estimate warranty cost accurately.

In this thesis, we will estimate warranty cost of a motorcycle sold by PT. X The warranty policy applied by this company is a two dimension warranty policy, that each motorcycle is warranted for 6 month or 6.000 km, which one is, finished first. Not all components of the motorcycle are covered by the warranty, and .for each component covered, the warranty rectifies only for its first failure.

In this research, the motorcycle is viewed as a multi-component system where its components connected serially. Then the motorcycle failure characteristic is modeled through characteristic of its components. We consider only components that give the biggest contribution of the total of warranty cost. The component failure is modeled using the one dimension approach. The Parameter values of the failure distribution are estimated by using warranty claim data. from all motorcycle units that had been sold in 1998.

The Results show that from 220 components that are warranted, 13 components of which give 80% of total cost. The warranty cost per motorcycle is approximated using the straight comparison of the warranty cost per motorcycle and percentage of the warranty total cost. As a result, the warranty total cost per motorcycle is Rp. 1281 (or almost 0,01% from the motorcycle price). This is far less than the common percentage (1,0 - 1,9%) given by manufacturing companies in developing countries.
