Observations have been done on fifteen female sugar gliders from September 1998 till June 1999.<p align=\"justify\"> <br /> The oestrus cycle and the length of the oestrus cycle phases determined by making vaginal smears every 3 or 4 days. Hormone (Fa and LH) content was determined by RIA method while histological observation was performed to observe the response of the reproductive organs during one oestrus cycle. The results showed that the oestrus cycle of sugar gliders occured repeatedly during September to December and April to June, which could be decided as their breeding season, while anoestrus period was from January to March. The length of oestrus cycle is 28 - 33 days and the length of pro-oestrus, oestrus, met-oestrus, and di-oestrus phases are 3 to 4, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, and 18 to 21 days respectively. E2 and LH content changes during one oestrus cycle, the highest at oestrus and the lowest at di-oestrus which coincide with the presence of large antral follicles and copus lutea in the ovary.<p align=\"justify\"> <br /> The weight, diameter, wall thickness and histological structure of the reproductive tract organs changes during one oestrus cycle corresponding with the changes of E2 content. It could be concluded that in captivity without males, sugar gliders have two breeding season with the oestrus cycle length between 28 to 33 days. The oestrus cycle during the breeding season is caused by the activity of the ovarian follicles in secreting sex hormones controled by gonadotrophin, and the reproductive organs response to the sex hormones. text |
