Description
Summary:Formulation of nanoparticles (nanoemulsion, nanosuspension) has been developed lately to improve pharmacological activity of drug. Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) has many pharmacological effects, one of which is as an immunomodulator. The aims of this study were to produce the stable nanosuspension formula and to reproduce nanoemulsion formula that contained kasumba turate’s ethanol extract. The combination methods of high shear homogenization (speed of 3,600 rpm for 13 minutes) and ultrasonication with 70% amplitude, 45:15 pulse for 5 minutes were applied to make nanosuspension. The combination methods were also applied to make nanoemulsion, with a speed of 3,600 rpm for 6 minutes on high shear homogenization method and 70% amplitude, 45:15 pulse for 10 minutes on ultrasonication methods. The best nanosuspension formula was obtained using a single surfactant, namely sodium lauryl sulfate (1%), with 219.9 nm particle size and 0.334 polydispersity index. Existing nanoemulsion formula can be reproduced. Nanosuspension and nanoemulsion were physically stabled at temperatures 4, 25 and 40°C for 28 days and 15 days. Nanosuspension in the freeze and thaw test stabled for 5 cycles.
