Sekanak Market Area is one of the historical areas which became the forerunner
of the growth of Palembang City. The area that started from economic activity is
identical with the old buildings of historical heritage. However, increased
competition between regions has made many traders in this historic area flee to
other areas that are more interested by visitors, so that many shop houses and
market stalls are closed and not maintained anymore. Therefore, this study aims
to formulate recommendations for developing strategies for heritage tourism that
can be applied in the Sekanak Market Area of Palembang City. Instead of
preserving and developing historic areas, heritage tourism which is based on
history and culture, is expected to attract the interest of visiting and reviving this
area with a concept that supports the identity of Palembang City as the oldest city
in Indonesia. In line with several government programs such as the strategic
program of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy 2020-2024 related to
Cultural Heritage Regeneration which is one of the development sites in
Palembang, then the development of priority areas for tourism in the South
Sumatra Province Spatial Plan 2012-2032, one of which is the Heritage City of
Palembang , these programs are also supported by Palembang Mayor Regulation
No. 48 of 2015 concerning the Arrangement Plan of the Heritage Area of the City
of Palembang, of which Sekanak Market Area is one of them. The location of the
study is not only intended for trade and services but also residential areas, so in
formulating recommendations for development strategies requires the perception
and preferences of local communities as consideration.
Thus, the approach used in this research is quantitative descriptive, in which the
analysis of perceptions and preferences of local people is done through the
questionnaire results described. For data collection, primary and secondary data
are collected, in which primary data are obtained through observations,
interviews, distributing questionnaires to local communities, and documentation.
Whereas secondary data is obtained through literature reviews, both theories and
regulations related to research areas and cultural reserves. In analyzing existing
data, techniques such as descriptive analysis, frequency distribution and simple
corsstabulation are used on the results of the questionnaire. This analysis is basedv
on research objectives so that it includes; (1) Descriptive analysis and frequency
distribution of potential heritage, (2) Descriptive analysis of the sense of place of
traditional market areas, (3) Descriptive analysis and cross tabulation of
important components of heritage tourism contained in the research area, and (4)
Descriptive analysis and also crosstabulation in formulating recommendations for
the developing strategies of heritage tourism in the research area.
The results of this research are in the form of recommendations on the strategy of
developing heritage tourism which includes the development of heritage
attractions, the provision of heritage tourism support facilities, enhancement of
local Human Resources (HR), improvement of sense of place in Sekanak Market
Area, and development of tourism accessibility. For the development of heritage
tourism attractions, the focus is on several components such as preservation,
tourist attractions and culture experience. Provision of heritage tourism
supporting facilities that should be considered include information and
interpretation, street furniture, cleanliness, accommodation, parking, finance and
souvenir centers. Then to increase local human resources, not only in quantity but
also in quality so it needs to include knowledge and education and empowerment
of local communities. Increasing sense of place of the Sekanak Market Area is
basically expected to be able to elevate local wisdom so as to create a distinctive
atmosphere that is different from other area. Furthermore, the development of
tourism accessibility can be categorized through two, namely land and water
routes, which in addition to the arrangement also requires the establishment of
traditional tourism transportation and its base. |
