Summary: | Urban development is a process of increased urban activities along with an increase
of amount of space and land to accommodate it, which demanding changes in land
uses. Land is a limited source but the people's demand to use it is keep increasing (for
living, etc). Therefore, demographic is the main pressure that drives changes in land
uses. The increase in population is closely related to the increase in demand for land
which can lead to conversion of agricultural/forest lands to non-agricultural so that it
has an impact on ecological changes that lead to environmental degradation and the
closure of the water catchment area with built up areas (impervious areas) such as
roads, buildings, and parking areas that causing infiltration capacity drop
dramatically. The low infiltration capacity increases the frequency and intensity of
flood. Therefore, this study aiming to identify how changes in land cover transitions
over time that caused a decrease capacity of land to absorb water in sub-Citepus
watershed, which is shown in the form of an index, with historical data for 2009-2019
and projected until 2039. This study also aim to simulate how the nature-based
solutions can play a role in increasing the capacity of land to absorb water over time.
Based on the results, there is a decrease of land capacity index in order to absorb
water every year, with an index scale of 0-1 divided into 5 categories (very bad, bad,
moderate, good and very good). In 2009, the land capacity index for absorbing water
in the sub-Citepus watershed is 0.57 (medium) and decreasing to 0.31 (bad) in 2039.
This phenomenon is caused by urbanizations which has led to the growth of changes
in green land cover to residential land. After the land capacity index has been
identified, this study tries to simulate the concept of nature based solutions to increase
the land capacity index, the result is that in the final simulation year, the index increase
from 0.12 to 0.43 (moderate). With the knowledge of these conditions, there is a need
to restore green land that has changed to residential land. By applying the concept of
nature based solutions, it can help to increase the capacity of the land to absorb water
and provide various additional benefits for the sub-Citepus watershed ecosystem. |
