Summary: | Indonesia is the largest archipelago country in the world that needs a safe, effective, and efficient inter-island transportation. For this reason, PTDI developed the N219 regional passenger aircraft to answer those needs. One of the requirements for an airworthy aircraft that must be met is the safety of the windshield structure when encountering bird strike
In this undergraduate final project, a study and analysis of the windshield structure response of N219 aircraft crashing with birds were conducted. The study was conducted using finite element numerical simulations to obtain a representative bird strike model. The bird model of this study used a model that had been developed in previous studies, which was a hemispherical cylindrical shape with a Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) element type. Results were evaluated by looking at the effects of four parameters, namely the impact direction, strain rate, altitude and temperature, and damping factor. Each parameter had a different set of materials that corresponded to each condition. Model validation was also conducted through numerical verification of existing simulation and experimentation results. The safety of the structure was analyzed based on the mechanical properties of the material, including Ultimate Strength and Failure Strain.
The study results showed that the response of the windshield structure was indeed affected by the four parameters, where the impact direction appeared the most fatal. The Safety Factor result of this parameter was below zero, indicating a low safety level. The other two parameters, strain rate, and altitude and temperature, had only minimal effects. The results of both Safety Factors reached above value of one, even reaching three, indicating a high safety level. Damping factor also only had minimal effects on the model. Its Safety Factors were below zero however, due to the material used was the same as the impact direction test,
