Summary: | Bromthymol blue (BTB) is one of the compounds used as a pH indicator. This compound has been widely applied in electrometric studies , especially voltammetry for the determination of analytes in a sample. Carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with BTB in voltammetric measurements have been developed because they have good sensitivity, selectivity and stability in measurement. During its development, these modified electrodes are becoming widely used in health areas linked to disease analysis such as dopamine detection and uric acid. The determination of glucose and butylated hidroxyanisole (BHA) levels is still being developed using enzymatic sensors and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods. This method has the disadvantages of a complicated procedure, long time analyte preparation and relatively expensive instrumentation. In this research, the surface of the CPE was modified with BTB electropolymerization, which was used to determine glucose and BHA levels by voltammetry. In determining the peak of analyte oxidation, measurement of glucose using BTB-modified CPE has not shown a good response despite several optimizations. Therefore, it is necessary to looking for the other modifying agent candidates and conduct a more in-depth literature study. Furthermore, the research focused on determining the BHA using BTB-modified CPE. Modifications done by electropolymerization using BTB as monomers and BHA as mold in a solution of phosphate bufer 0,1 M pH 7. Measurements were made with the technique diffential pulse voltammetry (DPV). BHA undergoes oxidation in the range 0.25 - 0.30 V. The optimum conditions for measurement are obtained using a modified CPE with a 1:1 analyte: monomer composition. Furthermore, it is necessary to optimize the electropolymerization cycle, measure the pH, support electrolyte and determine the work of the electrodes including the work area, reproducibility, detection limit, and sample analysis. The results of this study are expected to complement the results of previous research on BTB as CPE modifying agents for the determination of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) which usually comes together with BHA in a product.
