The Meliaceae family is known to produce secondary metabolites of the flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, terpenoids, and polyphenols. Some of these compounds are known as bioactive compounds. In this research, secondary metabolites were isolated from Swietenia mahagoni seeds obtained from the herbal shop "Babah Kuya", Bandung. The dried powder of the seeds was macerated with acetone as a solvent, then fractionated by the vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC) technique, and the fraction that containing the main component was purified by radial chromatography (RC) technique. The molecular structures of the compounds were characterized based on 1D-NMR and 2D-NMR spectroscopic data. Based on these stages of work, two pure compounds were obtained from the isolation of the acetone extract of Swietenia mahagoni seeds, two derivatives of limonoids, these are swietenine and swietenolide. text |
