Adsorption method is recognized as a well established technique to remove indigo carmine. Environmentally friendly adsorbent material normally use biopolymers such as cellulose. This cellulose related research was divided into three stages, which are isolation of cellulose, modification of cellulose, and adsorption study. Isolation of cellulose from coconut fiber was performed using alkaline treatment and delignification. Modification of cellulose by graft copolymerization was conducted using citraconic anhydride as monomer and cerium ammonium nitrate as initiator to yields copolymer cellulose-g-poly(citraconic anhydride) with a theoretical DPn 20. Kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamics studies were carried out to analyze the process of adsorption. The adsorption of indigo carmine on cellulose followed the Langmuir model, pseudo-first-order kinetics, endothermic process, and maximum adsorption density of 2.29 mg/g. Meanwhile, the adsorption of indigo carmine on cellulose-g-poly(citraconic anhydride) followed the Langmuir model, pseudo-second- order kinetics, endothermic process, and with a maximum adsorption density of 2.46 mg/g. The results indicated that the presence of poly(anhydride citraconic) as the side chains of cellulose resulted in 7.42% increse in the adsorption capacity cellulose. text
