BRIDGING THE FOREST AND THE SKY ISKANDAR AIRPORT PASSENGER TERMINAL, PANGKALAN BUN

Aviation industry contributes a significant amount carbon emission compared with other industries. One effort that could help aviation industry to limit its carbon emission is by designing land infrastructure that follows sustainable development principles. In line with this effort, Indonesian Ministruy of Transportation plans to develop a new passenger terminal in Iskandar Airport, Pangkalan Bun, West Kotawaringin Regency, Central Kalimantan. Such designing is also done to improve the airport’s service quality, so it stays relevant with the requirements set by the aviation industry in the future. By using “Bridging The Forest and The Sky” concept, the design process resulted in an airport passenger terminal with 14,550 m2 floor area, spread on four floors. The terminal is prepared to serve up to 1.5 million passengers per annum, with four departure gates, 12 check-in desks, 3 inspection lane, and 3 baggage conveyor. This terminal design upfront the interpretation of Wana, or forest, the local community’s prime identity. By intrepering the physical and cultural values of a rainforest, a design that shows West Kotawaringin’s identity, has high performance iand durability n fulfilling service quality, and also contributes into nature conservation by fulfilling EDGE green building standards, is achieved.
