The library, which is assumed to be held by the local Library and Archives Service, is not only intended for education and information sources, but also as a place for daily interaction and recreation for residents. The site used occupy a strategic position in the city center, which is within a 500 m radius from “alun-alun” and the district government offices. Apart from being close to housings and various public facilities, especially schools, the site is also located on the side of the Bedadung river, which separates the city area. The side where the site is located has a higher ground level and is connected to the opposite side by a descending bridge that also circles Semanggi Park. The need for function, strategic location, the existence of the Bedadung river and Semanggi park, as well as the trend of library transformation are the main reasons for this design to carry the grand concept of "Urban Lounge". "Lounge" here means space for interaction, while "urban" is the context and scale of the service. Thus, this library is designed to be a point of interaction for city residents in the frame of two themes of activities, daily education & recreation. The design process is held on a programmatic approach which starts with identification of design issues, followed by derivation onto vision-mission and objectives, then formulation of design strategies and solutions within the "Urban Lounge" frame. The resulting design is a complex of building consisting of a main building mass of five floors and six supporting building masses of three to four floors. This interconnected and stacked mass arrangement produces two main open spaces, one oriented inward, the other facing the river. In addition, there are several open spaces in relation to the road and surrounding buildings. The total building floor area is 17570 m2 with a site area of 10200 m2. The facility zones include the collection zone, creation zone, interaction & publication zone, circulation & building systems zone, management zone, open space zone, and green zone. The main structural system uses concrete piles as vertical elements and hollow concrete waffle slabs as horizontal elements. The appearance of the building is dominated by varied-material yet one-sized panels with vertical accents to tidy up and create newness in the area. text
