Superovulation on sugar glider (Petaurus breviceps papuanus) has never been done before, therefore, this research was conducted to study whether sugar glider could perform superovulation after hormone induction. Two experiments were carried out, (i) induction by PMSG, and (ii) induction using a combination of PMSG and LH. Females were injected intraperitoneally with a single dose of 5.0 IU, 7.5 IU PMSG or saline as control. Each female was then mated with a male, then sacrificed 6 days after injection and dissected. Observations were performed on the number of embryos, corpus lutea, large antral follicles, weight of ovary, uterus and oviduct and concentration of blood LH and oestradiol (RIA method). The results of experiment (i) revealed that PMSG could not stimulate superovulation in sugar glider. PMSG 5 IU did stimulate the formation of a large number of large antral follicles but were not superovulated although the LH concentration was increased. Therefore in experiment (ii), a combination of PMSG-LH was applied. Female animals were injected with 5 IU PMSG intraperitoneally, then mated, and 3 days later they were injected intramuscularly with 0.5 mg LH. They were sacrificed and dissected 4-5 hours (H-0), 24 hours (H-1), 48 hours (H-2) and 72 hours (H-3) after LH injection. Observations performed were similar as in experiment (i), except the concentrations of LH and oestradiol were not measured. The results showed that superovulation, with 7-13 embryos, were obtained in animals which were sacrificed 72 hours after LH injection. From the most advanced developmental stage of the embryos (16-32 cell), it could be estimated that the ovulation occured 12-32 hours after LH injection. From this experiment, it could be concluded that Petaurus breviceps papuanus has the capacity to superovulate after PMSG and LH induction. text
