Effective public transportation presents an opportunity not only to alleviate the trend towards individual vehicle ownerships but also helps limiting city-level pollution. Transjakarta is the backbone of the capital’s public transportation service with exponential increase in ridership since its inception in 2004. Converting conventional diesel and CNG buses to battery electric buses in a planned and organized way is an opportunity for Transjakarta that would potentially reduce more than 50% of the pollution generated by vehicle emission. While challenges to transition toward electrification may seem daunting, the realized financial savings in imported fossil-based fuel, noise reduction, and air-quality improvements can be significant. This exploratory research uses qualitative methodology by interviewing the key stakeholders and performing desk research to analyse current condition and barriers in adoption of electric buses. Business situation is analysed using PESTEL, supply chain and SWOT analysis to determine the effects of external and internal environment on adoption of electric buses in Jakarta. In order to determine the most cost effective charging strategy, cost benefit analysis is studied to determine total cost of ownership for depot as well as opportunity charged buses. Upon analysis of the barriers, alternative solutions are proposed based on innovative business models considering technological advancement, availability of infrastructure and operational needs of the city. Lessons are learned from cities like Shenzhen, Santiago, and Izmir who successfully operate electric buses. In the end, several recommendation for various key stakeholders and implementation plan to ensure smooth adoption of electric buses in Jakarta are proposed. text
