Summary: | Concrete is a complex material because the properties heavily influence by its components. High Strength Concrete is a type of concrete that utilize Silica Fume as the source for increasing the compressive strength of concrete. Therefore, this research is to show the effect of Silica Fume to the compressive strength of concrete with PPC and OPC types of cement. The research is conducted with the experimentation of compressive strength and literature review of the mechanism on concrete with the addition of Silica Fume.
This research found that there is an optimum composition of Silica Fume for different types of cement. PPC has the maximum compressive strength at 5% of Silica Fume and OPC at 7.5% of Silica Fume as shown in various international papers. This difference in optimum composition is related to the different composition in OPC, PPC and its components. OPC has a higher number of C3S and C2S resulting in the increase of Ca(OH)2 for pozzolanic reaction with Silica Fume to produce a secondary C-S-H phase, thus adding to the primary C-S-H formed in initial hydration. Those has been shown by XRD and SEM characterization.
