Description
Summary:Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is the one of Myrtaceae family plant which commonly used as a traditional medicine in Indonesia. Guava is known to be a rich in bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and volatile oils. Guava has pharmacological activities such as antibacterial, antioxidant, dental anti-plaque, antidiarrhea, antihyperglycemic, antinociceptive-antiinflammation, and anticancer, both in in vitro or in vivo assays. One of the guava variants is crystal guava. Crystal guava known to have fruits with few seeds. This study purposes to evaluate the characteristics and phytochemical screening of leaves and fruits of crystal guava (Psidium guajava L. ‘crystal’) and prepare a review article about chemical compounds and pharmacological activities of Psidium guajava L. Characterization performed of crude drug included macroscopic and microscopic, determination of total ash content, acid insoluble ash, water soluble ash, water content, water soluble extract, ethanol soluble extract, and loss on drying. Phytochemical screening was performed to see the presence of secondary metabolite in crude drug. Extraction was conducted by reflux method using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and 96% ethanol. Review article was prepared by considering and analyzing literatures. Water content of leaves and fruits of crystal guava were 2%, and 5%, respectively. All crude drugs contained flavonoid, quinone and steroid/triterpenoid groups. Article review was done by collecting and analysing 160 literatures. The water of all crude drugs fulfilled the requirement. Psidium guajava L. has many chemical compounds and pharmacological activities.
