Summary: | Music can now be considered as a part of everyone life nowadays. The technology nowadays
makes music more accessible anywhere and anytime. Based on the data, people listen to music for 32.1
hours per week and 43.5% of the listeners prefer to listen it through their smartphones. This listening to
music habit also developed in the business world, with 41.8% of the employee listening to audio for their
entire workday. University students, who will rule the work place in the near future, also have this habit
of listening to music while they are working/studying. A question arose, is listening to music bring any
benefit for the students? The result from the past researches showed a different result. Some say that
music is beneficial for working, while the other say that it is unhelpful. With music having lyrics
nowadays, another question arose, are there any differences between listening to instrumental music and
listening to music with lyric? The research about the instrumental music and lyrical music on work
performance also showed a different result.
Seeing the phenomena above, the researcher wanted to find whether music can affect someone
performance and whether there is a different between listening to instrumental music and lyrical music.
With most of today task in the workplace involved typing on the computer, the researcher wanted to look
more into the relationship between music and typing performance. University students also chosen to be
the subject since they are the ones who have the habit of listening to music while working and also
regularly use computer for their study.
This study used experiment for the main data collection method. The participants of this
experiment is required to retype a short story while listening to either instrumental music, lyrical music,
or no music. The experiment is conducted online via online meeting platform. The typing performance is
measured by the participants’ typing speed and typing error. The typing speed is measured by dividing the
total words with the participant’s time. The typing error is measured by comparing the participant’s result
with the original story.
From the analysis of the result, it was found that there is a significant increase of typing speed
when the participants are listening to instrumental music. When the instrumental music group, lyrical
music group, and the no music group is compared, there is no significant different of typing performance
between those groups. The conclusion of this research is that instrumental music is affecting typing speed
and there is no significant different between instrumental music and lyrical music. For the
recommendation of this research, manager can create a rule regarding listening to music while working.
The managers can recommend their employee to listen to instrumental music in order to increase their
typing speed. For the employee, they can listen to any music of their preferences since there is no
significant different between instrumental music and lyrical music. For further research, the researcher
suggested the research to be conducted face to face to remove issues like connectivity issue. Also, the
researcher suggested for further research to try different type of performance and try to examine about
music tempo and genre. |
