Description
Summary:Nowadays, the usage of mobile devices in the everyday lives of Indonesian citizen is significantly high. The usage of mobile devices for news reading, for gathering the latest information takes a great part in mobile device users’ daily lives. However, there are some problems associated with usability and experience in applications for news reading. The main problems defined in this research are lack of font size setting feature, lack of efficiency in navigation among news articles, difficulties in searching desired news articles, obstruction in reading flow caused by articles divided into several pages, navigation error, high density of article content, inability to enlarge images shown in articles. Therefore, in this research, interaction design and user interface for the targeted news applications are developed. This is done to give users a positive experience when using news applications. Basically, the interaction design consists of features that exist in existing news apps with additional features such as, history and save. The main goal is to design good interaction for news applications by evaluating the design with usability goals and user experience goals. The method utilized for this research is the user-centered design approach. The design of interaction and user interface is based on several usability goals and user experiences goals which is efficient to use, easy to learn, helpful, and pleasant. The final product of this research is a high-fidelity prototype for the mobile platform. Test results indicate that the design has had good interaction as the scores for usability goals and user experience goals has exceeded the average. Efficiency of the design is measured using overall relative efficiency (90.04%) and time-based efficiency (0.34 goals/sec), ease of use of the design with SEQ (Single Ease Question) for each task (all tasks has SEQ score for each, ranging from 6 to 7), and user experience, which is helpful and pleasant, measured using 4-point Likert scale with the results being 3.8 and 4 by average respectively. However, the interaction design and user interface could still be developed further to facilitate users and give them a more positive experience.
