Traditionally, one of the ingredients used for sun protection is rice bran. This material contains ?-oryzanol, the substance that is presumed to have an important role as sun protection to the skin. This study aims to develop the microemulgel formulation of rice bran oil (RBO) and evaluate the effectiveness of the dosage form as a sun protector. Characterization of RBO is determined by measuring its refractive index, identification of ?-???? ???®???±?????? ?¸ ð??’ sun protection factor (SPF) value. Microemulgel is constructed by combining microemulsion and gel base. PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil (PHCO) and Span 80 were selected as surfactants and propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400 as cosurfactants to prepare microemulsion. While Carbopol 940 and tri ethanol amine (TEA) were used as gel base. It was found that the refractive index of RBO was 1.471. The HPLC chromatogram of RBO showed the content of ?- oryzanol at retention time of 27.651±0.545, 30.372±0.598, 32.364±0.643, and 37.169±0.719 minutes. SPF values of RBO at 2500, 3510, 4510, 5550, and 6470 ppm were 2.483±0.047, 3.499±0.021, 4.536±0.012, 5.615±0.012, dan 6.540±0.019 respectively. The best formula obtained from this study consisted of RBO 8% and the total amount of surfactant and co-surfactant were at 55% with the composition of PHCO, Span 80, propylene glycol, and PEG 400 in 3:2:3:2 ratio. This microemulsion had the droplet size of 256.6 nm and polydispersity index of 0.290. Based on literature study, the RBO had the density in the range of 0.909-0.921 at 40?C and could be lower depended on variety of the rice. Physical stability study of nanoemulsion, microemulsion, microemulsion gel, and gel-cream containing RBO showed overall good physical stability. Study of dermal and ocular irritation potency of each ingredient used in the formula exhibited slight to no dermal irritation yet possible to ocular irritation.
