Lately, the mangrove forest ecosystem in Indonesia has become threatened due to illegal logging and trash sedimentation. To conserve the existence of mangrove in coastal area, Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI) is collaborating with Surabaya City Government to initiate a Mangrove Botanical Garden in Wonorejo Surabaya. To support the conservation process further, an Ecology Research Centre project adjacent to the botanical garden is proposed as a mangrove research and learning facility. This project will integrate research function with museum for public educational purpose. The problem of this project is how to design a building complex that can adapt to its site climate and specific condition while also able to facilitate different activities in comfortable, productive, and optimal state. a concept of ‘elevated building park’ is proposed for the design, where buildings are raised one meter from the site’s highest contour level as a respond to its condition and to maintain the wetland’s function as catchment area. The buildings are designed using steel as its main structure to reduce its dead load, each consists of one to three storeys. This concept is also applied on how the building masses are arranged in a fragmented position according to its function, allowing natural ventilation and sunlight to penetrate the building. This arrangement is designed based on a ‘park’ scheme, where buildings are organized surrounding an outdoor exhibition space. text
