Description
Summary:Building materials can affect the both the indoor and outdoor environment. In general, building materials in big cities in Indonesia can increase the urban air temperature and create the Urban Heat Island phenomenon. By choosing the right building wall materials or material engineering as an environmental mitigation, Urban Heat Island intensity predictably be lowered. However, keeping the indoor air temperature low for the comfort of building inhabitants must also be considered. One method to keep indoor air temperature low is by applying wall insulations. Commonly used insulations are internal and external insulations. The effects of external insulation towards the outdoor air temperature and brick wall temperature was observed, as was the effects of internal insulations towards the insulation layer temperature and indoor air temperature. Different insulation materials with varying thicknesses were used. For external insulation, EPS and silica resin were chosen, meanwhile EPS and polyurethane were chosen for internal insulation, with thickness values of 4 cm, 6 cm, and 8 cm. Simulation were done with COMSOL Multiphysics by simulating solar radiation. EPS were found to be better external thermal blockers than silica resin, but can cause the increase of UHI intensity, while polyurethane were found to be better internal insulation material because they cause the least change in indoor air temperature
