THE ROLE OF INSECT POLLINATORS ON THE QUALITY OF CUCUMBER FRUIT (CUCUMIS SATIVUS L.) USING BORDER PLANT AND NON BORDER PLANT

Pollinating insects have a role in the process of fruit formation, so it is important for fruit-based plant cultivation systems. In the cultivation system there are two groups of pollinating insects, namely wild insects and domesticated insects. On the other hand, with the aim of reducing the application of pesticides, a border plant is applied on some agricultural lands, non-production crops grown as part of an integrated pest control (IPM) program. This study aims to identify the types of insect pollinators that visit the cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cultivation system at border plants and non-border plants, determine the activity of pollinating insects including Visitation Rate (VR) and Flower Handling Time (FHT), and determine quality. Cucumber fruit (Cucumis sativus L.) includes length, diameter and weight of cucumber. The results of this study were the types of insect pollinators found in the cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) cultivation system with the addition of kenikir (Cosmos sulphureus) as a border plant consisting of Tetragonula laeviceps, Apis cerana, Xylocopa confuse, and Xylocopa latipes species. Meanwhile, the non-border plant treatment consisted of Tetragonula laeviceps and Apis cerana; Insect activity at the border plant has an average value and percentage of Visitation Rate (VR) (%) species of Tetragonula laeviceps, Apis cerana, Xylocopa confuse, and Xylocopa latipes respectively 29.75%, 13%, 6.25%, and 9.5% and The values of Flower Handling Time (FHT) are 0.39 s, 12.09 s, 0.20 s, and 0.19 s. Meanwhile, the visitatation rate with non-border treatment of Apis cerana and Tetragonula laeviceps insects was 13.5% and 4% and the Flower Handling Time (FHT) values were 0.14 s and 0.92 s; The highest quality of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) was obtained in the border plant treatment with open pollination sub-treatment with a fruit length of 18.3 cm, a diameter of 36.9 cm, and a weight of 171.9 grams. Meanwhile, the lowest fruit quality was obtained in the non-border plant treatment with open pollination subtreatment with fruit length 10.2 cm, diameter 29.2 cm and weight 77.6 grams. text
