Summary: | Components made of iron alloy such as cast iron are one of the popular choices used in the manufacturing industry because of their high strength dan wear resistance properties. However, defects such as cracks can occur in the casting process which can reduce the quality. One of the repair methods that can be used is thermal spray. In this research, a study of the effect of spraying distance on thickness and the amount of porosity of the coating was conduced through secondary data assessment. In addition, experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of spraying distance on the mechanical properties and the microstructure of the coating.
Experiments were carried out by using the variations in the spraying distance of 20 cm, 30 cm and 40 cm. After the thermal spray process, an evaluation of the results is carried out by observing the microstructure and hardness testing.
Based on secondary data assessment, increasing the spraying distance will reduce the thickness of the coating. While, it is necessary to use an optimal spraying distance to minimize the amount of porosity. Based on the experiment, it is necessary to use the optimal spraying distance in order to get the maximum hardness with the minimum amount of porosity in the thermal spray coating. |
