STUDY OF CHANGES RAINFALL CHARACTERISTICS IN WEST JAVA PROVINCE, 1921-2010

Climate change phenomenon changes the composition in the atmosphere and the Earth's climate system, one of which impacts on changes in rainfall characteristics. Within the climatology range, fluctuations in interdecadal variability from the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) can also cau...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/49999 Climate change phenomenon changes the composition in the atmosphere and the Earth's climate system, one of which impacts on changes in rainfall characteristics. Within the climatology range, fluctuations in interdecadal variability from the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) can also cause changes in rainfall characteristics. These changes can have an impact on water availability, food security, and can lead to hydrometeorological disasters. This study analyzes changes rainfall characteristics in West Java Province during the period 1921-2010 and its relation to climate change and interdecadal variability. Climate change analysis is done by calculating trend values from meteorological parameters. Interdecadal variability analysis is done by calculating the correlation between rainfall in West Java Province with IPO index. In addition, an anomalous regression map of meteorological parameters was produced to analyze how the IPO could affect rainfall in West Java. Statistically, rainfall in West Java Province increased from 1921 to 2010 with the value of monthly rainfall trend increasing by 1.61 mm/decade. Furthermore, there is a statistically significant positive correlation between the variability of IPO and rainfall in West Java Province. That means West Java region experienced a wet anomaly during the positive IPO phase and a dry anomaly during the negative IPO phase. Anomalous regression of meteorological parameters to IPO index shows that there was an increase in convection in West Java Province during IPO positive due to the wind anomaly pattern generated by the IPO. text
