THE ROLE OF POLLINATOR INSECT ON THE QUALITY OF COMMON BEAN (PHASEOLUS VULGARIS L.) USING BORDER PLANT AND NON-BORDER PLANT

Pollinator insects can acted as pollinator agents that can help the pollination process in fruit plants such as common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and have the characteristics of a preference for bright flower colors. This character is utilized through the addition of the flower of the yellow ray f...

This character is utilized through the addition of the flower of the yellow ray flower (Cosmos sulphureus) as a border plant in the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivation system which is expected to attract other pollinator insects which can increase biodiversity. This study aims to determine the types of insect pollinators that visit the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivation system with the addition of border plant and non-border plant, determine the activity of pollinator insects including visitation rate (VR) and flower handling time (FHT) and determine fruit quality by giving open pollination and close pollination sub-treatments in the form of fruit length (cm), fruit diameter (cm) and fruit weight (g). The results of this study indicated that the diversity of pollinator insects was higher in the border plant treatment and found that the types of insects visiting the common bean cultivation system were dominated by the order Xylocopa with average of visitation rate (VR) in the range 2.42 to 2.88 n/minutes with range of percentage p (%) on 38.79% to 100% and the average of flower handling time (FHT) in range 2.61 to 2.85 s. The common bean quality with open pollination sub-treatment have better quality than the close pollination sub-treatment at both the border plant and the non-border plant. text
