Summary:nsomnia is a common sleep disorder that occured when a person has difficulty starting and maintaining sleep. Insomnia needs to be treated immediately before it causes serious health problems. The use of synthetic hypnotic-sedative drugs can be used to treat insomnia, but it has dangerous side effects for long term usage. Therefore, alternative treatments that are derived from nature are needed. Ipomoea aquatica and Ipomoea reptans Poir are widely consumed and found in Indonesia and have various properties, one of them provide drowsiness. The purpose of this study was to evaluate hypnotic sedative effect of Ipomoea aquatica and Ipomoea reptans Poir and to determine the best hypnotic-sedative effect between Ipomoea aquatica and Ipomoea reptans Poir. The study began on June 1, 2020. Article review was obtained from the PubMed and Google Scholar with the keywords "Ipomoea aquatica and sedation and hypnotic" and "Ipomoea reptans Poir and sedation and hypnotic" and published from 2005 2020. There are ten articles from the keywords above. The sedative hypnotic activity experiments of those articles used several extract solvents, test methods and dosages. The results of the study showed that Ipomoea aquatica and Ipomoea reptans Poir had hypnotic-sedative effect. The best hypnotic-sedative activity between Ipomoea aquatica and Ipomoea reptans Poir could not be determined because of the limited number of research articles as well as research on these two plants using different dosage, method and positive control.
