Cultural diversity in Indonesia can be seen in Bugis with a culture that believes in and adheres to the existence of five genders. The inspiration that can come from various things, the culture of the Bugis five genders has never been an inspiration for contemporary costumes. The purpose of this research is to create contemporary costumes inspired by the Bugis five gender culture by exploring pleats techniques. Writing works is supported by collecting data on costumes, costume definitions, costume history, costume functions and also costume parts. Data on gender in general, definitions and differences for each of the five genders in Bugis, data on pleats, the history of pleats and their types and knowledge about design principles and color theory. Costume analysis and exploration of pleats techniques are carried out to make it easier to decide the form and technique that will be applied to the final work. The result of the writing of this paper is to make contemporary style costumes, a collection that can describe the differences between one gender and another based on the shape of the clothes by applying the pleats technique.
