The approachment applied in this research includes three main parts: extraction, separation, and analysis. Hydrocarbon compounds extraction from sediment can be done with KOH 0.5 N in methanol. Column chromatography on alumina : silica gel (1 : 1) eluted with methylene chloride can separate aromatic compounds.<p align=\"justify\"> <br /> Column chromatography on alumina eluted with methylene chloride or hexane can separate monoaromatics (BTEX) from polyaromatics hydrocarbon. It is good enough to analyze BTEX compound by HPLC method, in C18 column with the length 25 cm, methanol-water eluen 7 : 3, UV detector at 254 nm. Recovery percentage for benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylene were 85,05 ; 95,66 ; 84,01 ; and 86,42 % , respectively. text
