Description
Summary:Hypertension is a cardiovascular disease affecting community. Guidelines for hypertension therapy had been established, but people use traditional plants as alternative/adjuvant therapy despite no clear guidelines and as consequence it will alter effectiveness of therapy. One of the traditional plants used for decreasing blood pressure (BP) is cucumber, but unfortunately mechanism of action of cucumber as diuretic has not been widely studied. This research aims to inventorize traditional plants that had antihypertensive properties and their interactions with standard drugs, also to evaluate the diuretic-saluretic effect of cucumbers. The literature review was carried out by journal screening on Google Scholar and Pubmed using certain keywords and inclusion criterion, obtaining 70 journals for further analysis. Allium sativum L, Alpinia speciosa (JC Wendl.), 1pomoea digitata Linn., and Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. can be used for decreasing BP. Other plants that had been preclinically tested are required for further study to complete their evaluation and a caution are needed when it was consumed by hypertensive patients. To evaluate the diuretic-saluretic activity, rats were grouped and received furosemide 3.6 mg/kg bw as standard or cucumbers (9, 18, 27, 36 mg/kg bw); and to find out the interaction, cucumber was combined with furosemide (0.5:0.5). About 12 hours before the test the rats were fasted and received 0.9% NaCI (50 mL/kg bw) 15 minutes before the test. Urine volume was measured at 1 to 6 and 24 hours. Level of Nair in urine was measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results showed that cucumber has slightly effect of diuretic—saluretic and the activity was proportional with increasing dosage that is inferior to furosemide. Combination of cucumber and furosemide demonstrated an additive interaction, diuretic-saluretic effect from combination was equal to the sum of the effect of each taken separately.
