Summary: | PT Pindo Deli Pulp & Paper Mills is a process industry to meet the demand for paper, tissue, and packaging products. Paper Machine 8/9 Department focuses on transforming pulp into high-quality paper products with large volume production. However, currently, this company has not been able to perform in zero-defect productions. Photocopy paper trutone (PPT) has the largest number of products and also has the largest defects. Defective products need to be rejected or reworked (if it still fulfill some specification) that will cause another time consuming of production activity. Furthermore, this research aims to diminish the defective products by crafting some solutions to improve the quality of the product. Using the six sigma methodology by Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Contol framework.
Steps in define phase including problem formulation to observe PPT and defects in PPT. Guided by the Pareto chart, the type of defects that will be further inspected are wave, wrinkle, and calender mark. Steps in measure phase including daily reports of defective products to measure the stability and capability process. Current production level has stabilized with 4,4 sigma. In analyze phase, the grassroots of the problem are identified using Delphi and FMEA methods to obtain subfactors. The subfactors are uneven distribution of calender’s nip, no routine task of changing calender’s cover roll, lack of guidance in dryer felt control, lack of monitoring in starch application, and sheetbreak cleaning tardiness. In improve phase, the solutions are made to provide the procedure of nip inspection and felt setup control, provide routine task of changing cover roll, adding quality check-points, and design an alert system. In the control phase, the control of the solution’s implementation is done to validate the impact of changes.
