DEVELOPMENT AND COMPARISON OF VARIOUS GRADIENT-BASED OPTIMIZATION METHODS: APPLICATIONS IN STRUCTURAL AND HEAT TRANSFER PROBLEMS
This research presents a benchmarking of several gradient-based optimization methods that are applied to structural and heat transfer topology optimization problems in 2D and 3D domain. The formulation of the problems is focused on the minimization of the compliance that is written in nested formula...

The formulation of the problems is focused on the minimization of the compliance that is written in nested formulation. The Solid Isotropic Material Penalization (SIMP) material interpolation scheme is chosen to represent the topology model with the help of sensitivity filtering techniques. Minimizing the compliance leads to maximizing the global stiffness of the structure and minimizing the maximum temperature of the domain. The structural problems varied into cantilever problem, bridge problem and MBB problem whilst the heat transfer problem only considers the heat conduction case. Different optimization solvers including Optimality Criteria (OC), the Method of Moving Asymptotes (MMA), the interior point solvers in IPOPT and FMINCON and the sequential quadratic programming method in SNOPT, are benchmarked using sensitivity analysis. From this research, OC is presumed to be the most optimum method for solving the minimum compliance topology optimization problems. text |
