Phytotherapy in the form of Serenoa repens (W. Bartram) small berry (saw palmetto/SR) extract is
one of the alternative therapy for BPH. A number of clinical trial study has been performed on SR
extract to deterimine it’s efficacy, mechanism and safety. Results showed that the efficacy of SR
extract was not consistent enough to be used as alternative therapy. SR extract had an
antiandrogenic activity, proliferative proapoptotic activity, antiestrogenic activity and
antiinflamatory activity as a main mechanism and good safety record.
