Ghassani Dharmawan, Safira Indonesia Final Project mangosteen pericarp, antibacterial, antifungal, xanthones, secondary metabolites- INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/50442 Infectious disease is one of the major health problems in Indonesia caused by microorganisms. Infectious disease can be overcome by using antibiotics. The amount of antibiotic resistance cases have been increasing. One of the few options to overcome this problem is by developing antimicrobial agents from plants. Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) is a plant from Clusiaceae family which commonly found in South East Asia countries, including Indonesia. Mangosteen pericarp contains highxanthone derivative compounds which possess antimicrobial activity. This research is aimed to study antibacterial and antifungal activity of mangosteen pericarp extract and observe its spectrum against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Propionibacterium acnes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, andCandida albicans; and to determine which active compounds from mangosteen pericarp that have the potential to be developed into new antimicrobial agents. Mangosteen pericarp was extractedby maceration method using methanol solvent. Then, its antimicrobial activity was determined by disk diffusion method. Determination of active compounds was carried out by collecting and analyzing informations obtained from the literatures. Based on the results of this research, methanol extract of mangosteen pericarp with concentration 0,1%; 0,5%; 1%; 5%; and 10% exhibited antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and P. acnes. Whereas no activity was found against E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and C. albicans at the concentration used in this study. Active compounds from mangosteen pericarp that have the potential to be developed into new antimicrobial agents are ?-mangostin and ?-mangostin ?-mangostin, ?-mangostin, gartanin, 8-deoxygartanin, andgarcinone B. text
