Description
Summary:Coronavirus Disease 19 (COVID-19) is a disease caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-COV-2). Specific antiviral for this disease has not been found yet. Vaccine clinical trials will be conducted in Indonesia. Influenza virus and Human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (HRSV) could also cause flu symptoms and respiratory disorders. There are 82% genome similarity between SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV-1. This literature study aims to collect data of plants as antiviral to relieve the symptoms of flu and respiratory disorders that is potential to be used in COVID-19 patients by reviewing them using a search engine on the Pubmed site and Google Scholar. The search results are then grouped as in vitro tests, in vivo tests, and clinical trials, and analyzedbased on the mechanism of action. Glycyrrhiza sp.,Houttuynia cordata,Isatis indigotica, Laurus nobilis, Lycoris radiata, Polygonum multiflorum, Rheum officinale, Sambucus formosanaNakai, Scutellaria baicalensis, Strobilanthes cusia, Toona sinensis and Torreya nucifera have the potentiality to be used as anti-corona.Caesalpinia sappan, Clinacanthus siamensis, Curcuma longa Linn.,Echinacea purpurea, Forsythia suspensa, Glycyrrhiza sp.,Ginkgo biloba, Lonicera japonica Thunb.,Paeonia lactiflora, Pelargonium sidoides, Polygala karensium, Polygonum cuspidatum, Punica granatum, Scutellaria baicalensis, Sophora sp., andTaraxacum offcinalehave the potentiality to be used as anti-influenza. Cimicifuga foetida L., Mentha piperita L.,Pueraria lobata (Wild.) Ohwi, and Zingiber officinale can be used as anti-HRSV.Eleutherococcus senticosusand Terminalia chebula Retzcan be used as anti-RNA-viral wide spectrum. Clitoria ternatea L., Costus specious,Hedera helix L., Saussurea lappa,Thymus vulgaris, andZingiber officinale can be used as anti-inflammatory and relieve respiratory disorders. Based on its mechanism of action as an RNA-dependent-RNA-polymerase (RdRp) inhibitor, 3CLproinhibitor, and immunomodulator against SARS-CoV-1, Houttuynia cordatawas rated as the most potential plant to be developed asanti-SARS-CoV-2.Further research should be conducted to develop various herbal plants with potential antiviral activity to relieve fluand respiratory disorders.
