Summary: | Infectious disease usually caused by a microorganism and treated by the use of antibiotics. The
excessive use of antibiotics nowadays leads to resistance. An alternative medicine needs to be
developed by utilizing extracts from plants such as pomegranate, betel, and turmeric. Research
about betel, pomegranate, and turmeric extracts as antimicrobial has been done on gram-positive
bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Propionibacterium acnes,
gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, also fungi such as
Candida albicans. Some research about antimicrobials activity of fractions and isolate from those
three plants also have been performed. From some recent studies, extracts of these three plants
performed antimicrobial effects on various bacteria and fungi. The combination of betel, turmeric,
and pomegranate with other plants gives a better antimicrobial effects, thus making these three
potential better effects in combination. A good combination effects are also shown by betle and
pomegranate with antibiotics. These three plants have high potential to be combined to increase
their biological activity and to be an alternative use of antibiotics in the treatment of infectious
diseases.
