Many researches revealed that the essential oil of tobacco leaf possesses antimicrobial activity. A literature study for tobacco leaf essential oil nanoemulsion formulation using Tween 80 and Cremophor RH 40 as surfactant, and PEG 400 as cosurfactant was conducted. Papers were collected from search engine and electronic databases Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. This literature study aims to analyze the antibacterial activity of tobacco essential oil, and to analyze the effect essential oil nanoemulsification towards the oil's antibacterial activity, nanoemulsion's stability, and its effects when used topically on the skin. Datas were extracted and informations were collected to be analyzed. Tobacco essential oil possesses medium to strong antibacterial activity, which is caused by the oil's key component neophytadiene. Some papers stated the compatibility of Tween 80, Cremophor RH 40, and PEG 400 for essential oil nanoemulsion formulation that could produce a stable nanoemulsion, in which combination with cosurfactant is preferred due to even better product stability. Considering essential oil's stability issues, ultrasonication and spontaneous emulsification were chosen as the most suitable fabrication method for nanoemulsion preparation. Moreover, formulation of nanoemulsion incorporating essential oils were proven to increase the antibacterial activity of the essential oil, even after 1000 series of dilution. Based on the component analysis, tobacco leaf essential oil, Tween 80, Cremophor RH 40, and PEG 400 will not cause irritation to the skin hence they are suitable to be used in nanoemulsion formulation for topical use. text |
