Description
Summary:Indonesia has abundant natural resources, one of which is forest products. The rapid development has resulted in increasing demand for wood, so that in meeting the demand for wood, it is necessary to use fast-growth species which is modified into plywood, among others. The resin for adhesives commonly used in the plywood industry is urea-formaldehyde (UF). However, UF resin has the disadvantage of producing formaldehyde emissions which can be harmful to health. One of the efforts to reduce formaldehyde emissions is the addition of a chemical-based UF catcher, but it can reduce the mechanical properties of the product and the price is relatively expensive. As for the catcher biobased material can reduce formaldehyde emissions, one of which is the finely ground surian bark. This study aims to determine the effect of adding filler bark surian measuring 100 and 120 mesh to urea-formaldehyde adhesive on the characteristics and formaldehyde emission of sengon plywood (Falcataria moluccana). This research was conducted at PT. Sumber Graha Sejahtera, Balaraja, Tangerang with a period of four months from November 2019 to February 2020. The research method used was RAL using anova analysis with Duncan's continued test. The treatments in this study were 100 and 120 mesh surian bark filler with filler content of 8%; 10% and 12% were compared with controls using industrial filler with a content of 10%. Then the filler is mixed with UF resin (100%) and hardener (0.3%), which is then compressed using cold pressing followed by hot pressing. Then the conditioning was carried out for one day and several test samples were cut based on the JAS 2014 standard. The parameters observed were moisture content, density, delamination, tensile strength, bending strength and formaldehyde emission. The results showed that the use of surian bark filler had a significant effect on moisture content, density, and formaldehyde emission in sengon plywood. The addition of filler bark surian does not reduce the mechanical properties of the sengon plywood. The best treatment is the addition of filler bark surian measuring 100 mesh with a level of 10% where the formaldehyde emission value decreased by 96.5% compared to the control
