PAPI LIGHT ELEVATION MEASUREMENT USING COLOUR DISTANCE METHOD WITH WEB CAMERA

Airplanes need to be at 3° when landing on an airstrip in order for the plane to land smoothly. On final landing phase, one of the most import light in an airstrip is Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI). PAPI Light act as a visual guide for pilots to make sure the airplane is on the right an...

On final landing phase, one of the most import light in an airstrip is Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI). PAPI Light act as a visual guide for pilots to make sure the airplane is on the right angle before landing. Currently used method to check the PAPI Light’s condition uses a specifically designed plane and costs a lot of money. These circumstances are making a rather troublesome difficulties for small airports outside of big cities to calibrate their PAPI Light. One of the components that must be calibrated is the PAPI Light’s angle. Every PAPI Light have their own elevation convention that must be accounted until minutes resolution. This document will give a detailed explanation on the design of an instrument for elevation angle checking using delta E analysis method. The instrument will have the ability to move according to PAPI Light’s angle and capture images that will be further examined using web camera. In the middle of PAPI Lights, An intermediate pink color exists and can be used for finding the elevation angle of PAPI Lights. Delta E method itself is an algorithm to find the supposed distance between two colors according to their position from a CIE Lab color space diargam. The algorithm itself will be used to compare the pink color that was acquired through webcam and the referenced pink color from PAPI Light’s manual. This color finding process will be implemented using exploration process using BH1750, Nema 17, and metallic frame with threaded rod for vertical movement. The instrument was developed together with Balai Teknik Penerbangan as PAPI light provider for testing. Result shows that this method gives an accurate elevation angle measurement with an error less than 3’. text
