INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/50642 Since 2014, biomechanical research team at the Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - Bandung Institute of Technology (FTMD ITB) has developed component of transfemoral prosthesis, namely knee joint prosthetic, to support people with above knee disabilities to work in the industrial sector. In general, transfemoral prosthesis is functioned only for walking, even though this tool is supposed to support the user's activities, such as manual material handling (MMH) using various types of containers. This experimental study aims to evaluate the effect of the type of container, weight of the load, and its interaction on the performance of the transfemoral prosthesis and to provide design improvement of the transfemoral prosthesis for MMH task. The experiment was conducted using a within-subject design involving eight people with above knee disabilities using two factors, type of container (box without handle and box with handle) and weight (4 kg, 6 kg, 8 kg, and 10 kg). Measurements were made using the prosthetic observational gait score (POGS), rating perceived of discomfort, and perception of steadiness. The result of POGS evaluation shows that there was an interaction effect between two factors on performance of the transfemoral prosthesis that as the load increased, the tendency of the body to lean on the side of the prosthetic was also increased, which indicates that the transfemoral prosthesis’s design needed improvement. The trend data also shows that there were two other POGS criteria which indicated poor performance. Based on subjective assessment, the heavier the load is carried, the higher the level of discomfort and the lower the level of stability felt when participant use transfemoral prosthesis for MMH task. Design improvement suggestions are given for the four components of the transfemoral prosthesis, specifically socket, knee joint, foot, and suspension (belt) based on three POGS criteria and subjective assessment related to discomfort and stability. text |
