Description
Summary:The oil spill incident occurred at the end of March 2018 has polluted Balikpapan Bay. Based on the satellite image, it can be seen that in two days, the spill has reached the upstream area of the bay and also in the Makassar Strait. In order to give a more detailed look at the movement and changes in the characteristics of the oil spill, this study uses the oil spill model (OpenOil) in which the input data such as current velocity is generated from the 3-D Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS). Meanwhile, wind speed data uses a global dataset from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA-5 that has been subsetted according to the domain model of Balikpapan Bay. Elevation data from the hydrodynamic model are compared to the tides observation of Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) database at Semayang Port, Balikpapan. Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Percentaged Error (MAPE), and model skill are used as verification methods where the results for each method are 8.8 cm, 9.5% and 0.9, which shows the difference is not too far between the simulation results and the observational data. From the simulation results, it is known that the depth-integrated current has a maximum value of about 1.08 m·s-1 and the average is about 0.17 m·s-1 of the entire model domain that occurs in ebb tide and flood tide conditions. The results of the oil spill model show the spreading pattern of oil particles following the pattern of tidal current in Balikpapan Bay. The oil particles are seen to spread rapidly in the ebb tide and flood tide conditions. The coastal area of Penajam Pasir Utara and Balikpapan is affected by the oil spill after 12 hours and 36 hours after the incident. The simulation also shows that as much as 2.5 million kg of the total mass of oil spilled has been lost only due to the evaporation process which occurred 18 hours after the incident
