Description
Summary:Eugenol is a major constituent of clove oil that has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities. Eugenol has a good antibacterial activity against various gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, one of which is Staphylococcus aureus. However, it has side effects such as skin irritation. Therefore, encapsulating eugenol into a delivery system is expected to reduce the side effects. This study conducted optimization of eugenol Nanostructured Lipid Carrier (NLC) loaded into PVA/Chitosan as wound dressing. NLC was made by incorporating solid and liquid lipid for enhancing its encapsulation efficiency with addition of surfactant as NLC stabilizer. An emulsification-ultrasonication method has often been selected due to its safe and simple preparation step. The amounts of lipid and surfactant were the important factors affecting the particle size. Before preparing PVA/Chitosan hydrogel using freeze thaw method, chitosan was conjugated with gallic acid. Gallic acid is phenolic acid derivative that has a variety of activities such as antibacterial and antiinflammation activity, as well as enhancer of wound healing process. Having a good porosity and mechanical properties, PVA and chitosan hydrogel is a suitable matrix for improving wound healing process.
