Eugenol that has antioxidant, antibacteria and antiinflamatory properties was found to accelerate wound healing despite its irritating effects. This study developed formulation of PVA/ gallic acid grafted chitosan conjugate hydrogel which was carried out using freeze thawing method. Chitosan was conjugated with gallic acid using free radical method to increase antioxidant activity of chitosan. Optimum formulation of NLC eugenol is used to reduce irritation of eugenol and is delivered in the hydrogel matrix as a wound dressing. NLC eugenol was made using emulsification-sonication method. Characterization and evaluation of hydrogel matrix includes water absorption capacity, mechanical properties, morphology and porosity of the hydrogel, rate of degradation, release test, and dermal irritation test. Based on literature studies, swelling ratio of hydrogel was found to be mainly influenced by polymer content, freezing temperature, freezing time, and number of freezing thawing cycles. SEM porosity data confirm that pore size increases with chitosan content. However, the use of lower temperatures or longer freezing times, results in higher porosity and smaller pores. There is no irritation in encapsulated eugenol compared to pure eugenol, encapsulated eugenol was safe and can be used for delivery system. PVA/ Chitosan hydrogel matrix shows very low irritation properties. text |
