Hypertension is a persistent condition of increasing blood pressure (BP) which is one of the biggest factors causing cardiovascular disease. The community in Indonesia has been using traditional medicinal plants as alternative/adjuvant therapy for handling hypertension, such as cucumber. However, guidelines for using herb remedies to treat hypertension have not yet widely available and cucumber’s mechanism of action through inhibition of b-adrenergic receptor has not been studied. This research aimed to inventory the information on traditional plants used for hypertension therapy and its interactions with standard drugs and to evaluate antihypertensive activity of cucumber fruit in hypertensive rats induced by adrenaline. Literature review was carried out by searching journal through PubMed and Google Scholar with particular keywords and inclusion criterion, resulting 61 journals for further analysis. Tumeric (Curcuma longa L.), breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis Fosberg.), and garlic (Allium sativum L.) can be used for decreasing BP. To evaluate antihypertensive activity, rats were induced by adrenaline 2,7 ?g/kg bw. Control group received propranolol 7,2 mg/kg bw, the experimental groups received cucumber juice of 9, 18, 27, 36 mg/kg bw or combination of propranolol + cucumber (7,2 mg/kg bw + 36 mg/kg bw). Blood pressure was measured on T0 until T120 after induction using CODA® tail-cuff blood pressure system and data was analysed statistically using SPSS software. The results showed that cucumber has antihypertensive activity with the best activity at dose 36 mg/kg bw. Combination of propranolol + cucumber demonstrated indifferent interaction by showing less antihypertensive effect compared to using of cucumber or propranolol alone.
