Description
Summary:The increase in number of vehicles caused an increase in hazardous waste generation in automotive shops such as metal scraps, metal based packagings, used spare parts and used lead-acid batteries that has to be managed according to Governmental Decree Number 101 of 2014 concerning Hazardous Waste Management. This study focused on licensed and unlicensed automotive shops in Bandung City using stratified sampling method by determining waste generation and composition, evaluating existing management system and followed by developing management system alternatives. Hazardous waste generation of metal components and lead-acid batteries in licensed shops is 0,585 kg/vehicle/day and 0,163 kg/vehicle/day in unlicensed shops with the most waste generated in licensed shops came from oil filters in small quantity generators for 30% and metal scraps in conditionally – exempt small quantity generators for 68,3% in unlicensed shops. The compliance of waste management towards regulation in licensed shops is 61,77% and 18,96% in unlicensed shops. The system started with placing wastes in cubic yard container and transporting wastes with wingbox truck. Battery cells recycled with cupola furnace and used spare parts went through thermal process before combined with scrap metals recycling then shredded with scrap metal shredder, sorted with magnetic drum and eddy current separator, melted with electric arc furnace followed by solidification and distribution.
