Description
Summary:Fever, inflammation, and pain are symptoms that arise from disease. Until now, Non-steroidal Antiinflammatory Drug (NSAID) used to manage these symptoms. However, long-term treatment using NSAID might lead to several side effects on the digestive and cardiovascular system. Indonesia's herbal plants have the potential to be an alternative medicine for NSAID in managing these symptoms. This literature review was performed to compile data of Indonesia's herbal plants with analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic activities tested by preclinical or clinical studies and have the potential to be alternative drugs from NSAID. Data of related plants derived from search engines such as Google Scholar and PubMed Central. It was selected based on inclusion criteria such as it was published in the last ten years, an international or a national journal, using English or Bahasa Indonesia, and exclusion criteria such as plants didn't grow in Indonesia and preclinical and clinical studies were tested using a combination of several plants. From the searched result, 30 plants have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic. Activities of 30 plants have been proven in preclinical studies, and eight plants have been proven in clinical studies. The whole plant of key lime or Citrus aurantifolia (Christm.) Swingle can be the alternative medicine from NSAID because based on the preclinical study with dose 200 mg/kg bb showed inflammation, pain, and fever relief effects that are significantly different from control and comparable to standard drugs like aspirin and diclofenac.
