Description
Summary:Based on traffic crashes data, intersection is one of the crash-prone locations in urban areas, this is because the number of pedestrians and motor vehicles is higher than in rural areas. A large proportion of crashes involving pedestrian occurs at intersections due to conflict with left or right turning vehicles. By increasing safety at intersections, the number of traffic crashes can be reduced significantly, so safety at intersections must always be considered, especially in the crossing facilities. This study seeks to develop a model of road crossing safety for three-leg intersections. This model produces a safety index that can be used to prioritize the safety treatment of intersections. Data were collected from 33 legs of 11 signalised and unsignalized intersections in the city of Bandung. The safety value model was developed by using multiple linear regression. The regression method used is stepwise backward elimination. The dependent variable is the average safety rating of the respondent’s perceptions whereas the independent variables used are traffic volumes and intersection geometric characteristics. The results showed that variables influencing safety of crossings at three-leg intersections are traffic volume and presence of zebra-crossing. Zebra crossings are designed so that drivers/riders can be more aware of the presence of crossing pedestrians so it increases the safety of road crossings. Conversely, the higher the traffic volume will reduce the safety of road crossing because more and more vehicles will interact with the crossing pedestrians. The safety value of road crossings in the city of Bandung ranges from 2.57 - 3.59 with an average of 3.11, which is classified in the category of not safety.
